Recharging batteries at 1500m: Vigilius mountain resort in South Tyrol
Unplugging in busy AI times is not easy. I found a unique spot in South Tyrol, only reachable by cable car, with scenic views over the dolomites, hiking, spa treatments, high quality food, and kind humans - to recharge my batteries.
I like mountains, lakes, nature, hiking, and quiet spots, creative food, new tastes and culture. I also have collected many "want to visit" green markers in Google Maps. For 2026, I thought about going to South Tyrol, northern Italy. I had been there as a child, Rosengarten group, Dolomites, beautiful views and memories. Nowadays, the region puts visitor limits on the mountains because so many people join.
I was curious if there would be other places with the same views but less overrun and more quiet. Therefore, I widened the region from Bolzano to Merano, and filtered the results by how well are they connected to hiking routes. Their websites and reviews, why do people really love it there. And how do I map onto these people's experiences, we are all different. The time to get there, and maybe flexibility with my car to do spontaneous exploration.
The Vigilius mountain resort got my attention - its Google maps marker was on a parking lot, while its real location is high up the mountain, 1500m/4921ft.

You can reach it only by cable car, and leave your car in a safe parking garage. The narrative was too good to be true: Entering the cable car, let go of any stress and enter a new world in 5 minutes. So I tried it - not before reading many reviews with real experiences. I found this article the most inspiring:

I intentionally booked the last week of July, knowing that school holidays start in August in Italy and Bavaria, Germany, avoiding traffic jams. The weather high up the mountain was also seemingly not that hot. Temperature was between 15C (59F) morning and 25C (77F) afternoon, while it was 35C (94F) in Lana down the mountain. Perfect hiking weather.
Arriving at 1500m
After a ~6 hours drive from Nuremberg via Munich, Innsbruck, Bolzano, I landed in Lana, Italy. The hotel had sent pre-checkin questions, including to register the license plate for parking garage entry. A cable car employee was waiting already, quickly handed over the ticket and made sure I made it into the 5pm cable car; running each half hour until 7pm, then hourly for hotel guests. The 5 minutes up to 1500m/4912ft really let me forget all the stress I had in the week before, a blog tutorial delivered, and now just relaxing and recharging batteries.

A hotel staff member was waiting on cable car exit, and my luggage was brought into my room, while we did a tour through the venue - walking in natural light, built with sustainability and climate in mind.

From the reception to the restaurants, rooms, spa area to the sun terrace and my room, I noted to myself that the sun terrace would be mine, and explored the spa treatment options, too. The paradise garden was lovely - the old trees were there before the hotel was built 20 years ago, and continue living inside.

The hotel offered an aperitif with drinks and small dishes before dinner, another "I have arrived" moment. Dinner is served from 7pm in the "fine dining" 1500 restaurant, which was great throughout my 7 days stay, the view together with regional food.

The menu offered a seasonal fixed selection, and one menu selection that changed daily. This was a perfect fit to explore new tastes, and if not matching, have a fallback.

After sleeping 12 hours during the first night, I made it late to breakfast, buffet served until 10:30am. "Scrambled egg with everything, and a cappuccino" became my favorite. I never needed lunch, only occasionally visited Stube Ida for coffee and homemade cakes (but they offer lunch, too). And that view ...

Delete "always on" and relax
On the second day, I was enjoying breakfast with a view, and the Apple watch sent a notification to get up and read some app updates. I was like "I don't care". Later, I removed the watch from my arm wrist, feeling a little more free. As someone who knows being addicted to checking updates and doom scrolling, a good learning to just leave things be.

The hotel also follows a digital detox strategy, where the Wifi is shutdown between 11pm and 7am. Actually, it was 11:29pm, I could not resist testing the drop to 5G on the second day after a great evening ;) Yes, there is mobile internet ... but it wasn't important. I enjoyed the creative and excellent dinners until ~9pm, sometimes 10 or 11, and then sat down with the evening sun, reading the next adventures in sci-fi, Perry Rhodan 1130+.
Stay curious with quality time
On my second day on Friday, a new event series was starting: Women behind Wine, a peek into successful careers, tasting special wines, and sharing a social dinner table, starting with Fenja Hinz. It was an inspiring evening, with different backgrounds and stories, enjoying quality time together, I just wished it never ended.

I usually don't drink alcohol, but during vacation, there's an exception: South Tyrol is a great area for new tastes with wine and food. On the first day, I met the hotel restaurant's wine sommelier Patrick. I don't know much about wine, and their recommendations were just great. That inspired me to try a new wine every day, taking notes for family and friends :)
The hotel staff is also very engaged with activities - yoga meditation and forrest exploration, guided explorations and hikes, wine/water tasting, and much more. The program is shared as a weekly "newsletter", and signing up is as easy as walking by the reception after breakfast.

One of my personal highlights: "Forrest bathing with Werner, outdoors" turned into sitting on the forrest floor, realizing the moment, sharing life stories, a little bit of self reflection, meeting new friends, mixed together with South Tyrollean dialect charm.

Mental wellness
The hotel spa offers a great selection of massage treatments, including Swiss stone pines which made me curious. Feeling a little burned from busy work, I booked a 50 minutes massage, and lucky me, they already had a slot on Saturday. Wow, what an experience ... I then rested on "my" sun terrace for quite some time.

I also wanted to visit the mountain and hiking trails. My preference are easy hikes, no rough "going up" routes, instead enjoying nature, silence and views. Next to the cable car station, there is the start of the chair lift which brings you up another ~250m (820ft) on top of the mountain Vigiloch.

Started at the church St.Vigiloch, and then moved north to a black pond (Schwarze Lacke) which marked the start of the Panoramic View hike in the forrest, my main goal.

Just sitting down at several spots, and enjoying the quiet views made my day.

There's more activities and spots to explore. I also decided to book two more massage treatments, where I almost fell asleep ... which is a good relaxation sign ;)
Vigilius in a nutshell
- Travel: By car - secure parking garage at the Cable car stations. Plane/Train - Bolzano, Milano, Innsbruck as the main connections.
- Cable car up to the hotel (5min), the ticket is included for your stay as much as you want to go up/down. The smaller chair lift to go on top of the mountain is also included, and invites for relaxed hikes and exploration.

- Rooms: Large, cosy kingsize bed, natural materials, Swiss pine everywhere, including the shampoo. No TV.
- View either morning sun with dolomites but front with more external guests noise, or evening sun on the backside, more quiet. Garden access or first floor. I truly enjoyed garden access and evening sun, in a suite (first time try for extra space).

- Food: Excellent, regional, fresh, creative.
- Breakfast had all my favorites: Fresh vegetables, cheese, butter, bread, scrambled eggs, fruits (melon, pineapple, even strawberries), and out-of-the-oven pastries (omg the pistachio croissants!)
- Dinner had two menus - one seasonal, and one changing every day. Half-board guests can select 4 courses from the entire menu. Every day was unique, and I never left hungry.

- Wellness and spa: Relaxing and refreshing massages, 25/50/80min, Swiss pine options. Pool, whirlpool, Sauna, terrace.
- My highlight: The sun terrace on the second floor. Fresh tap water, with a view over the dolomites. You always cross the paradise garden, where the hotel is built around existing trees.

- Service: Kind, professional, attentive team, with a focus on you recharging batteries. Optional activities create an inclusive experience.
- Great conversations with wonderful humans - special thanks to Simon, Michael, Reni, Arta, Kuldeep, Kateryna, Vanessa, Max, Patrick, Viviana, Nora, Vera, Werner, Sophia :)
- Summary: 5 stars with a focus on quiet relaxation, and quality time where less is more.
- It might not match everyone's expectations with 5 stars, and related pricing. I highly recommend reading recent reviews (within 3 years, after re-opening the hotel after cable car renovation, with recent service/kitchen teams).
Feeling recharged
6 full days (7 nights) were gone fast. I fully unplugged after 4 days, and made the max out of it. I also knew it was a more expensive vacation, so this is something special in my life - work hard, relax hard.
Finding the Vigilius mountain resort was a lucky charm, following my curiosity. The mix with the focus on the little things while offering high quality food, service, location makes it a perfect fit for me. There's always room for improvements (e.g. finding a venue map, or the parking garage entry), which I shared with the team already. And it inspires - the Swiss pine shampoo felt so refreshing during showers, already ordered it for home.
I usually try to find a new vacation spot each year; this is the first time where I feel like I could be returning next year. There's more to explore with food and people in Lana, Merano, Bolzano, and ... just that calming view on the terrace after a relaxing massage or long hiking trail, with Affogato and homemade cakes. Let's check in 2027 :)
